Thanks to this coronavirus ordeal, I've been trying to not go to the grocery store unless I absolutely HAVE to. (I lasted 10 days last grocery trip and my goal is to make it 14 days this time!) So, I've been having to substitute or replace some things that I'm running out of in certain recipes. I plan my meals out ahead of time, so I know what to buy at the store, and somehow I forgot to pick up some barbecue sauce. I had already taken my crock pot and pork ribs out before I realized I didn't have any BBQ sauce, so I needed to make some asap. One day I'll post a BBQ sauce recipe using honey instead of sugar, and a homemade ketchup to make it healthier, but like I said, this whole epidemic had me digging through my pantry to see what I had to make some sauce, and it came out pretty good (even if it's not the healthiest homemade bbq sauce).
For this easy recipe, you can mix this in a blender or just stir by hand really well so all of the ingredients are incorporated. This time I just mixed it by hand (well, actually my toddler did, which just goes to show how easy it is!) This recipe makes about 28-30 oz of sauce so I find using a 32 ounce mason jar works perfect for this! If you don't already have any, this 4 pack is a pretty good deal! They come with lids, but I just prefer colorful lids, So I use these colorful ones too! We use mason jars for almost everything in our house so we have a ton and the extra lids come in handy!
Ingredients:
- 1 1/2 Cup Ketchup
- 1 1/4 Cup Brown Sugar
- 1/2 Cup Red Wine Vinegar
- 1/2 Cup Water
- 2TBSP Worcestershire Sauce
- 2.5 TBSP Mustard Powder
- 1tsp Pepper
- 2tsp Salt
- 2tsp Paprika
Directions:
1. Mix ketchup, water, brown sugar, red wine vinegar, and Worcestershire sauce in a bowl making sure there's no clumps (blend in blender if desired).
2. Add in salt, pepper, paprika and mustard powder
3. Stir well
4. Pour into glass jar/container and store in fridge
I also like to make my sauce on the runny side because I use it for marinades and I find that if it's runnier it absorbs into the meat better. BUT, if you want to use it for dipping, just add a little cornstarch and mix until it's the consistency that you like!
Enjoy!
